Astrocamping is a voluntary effort that aims to promote astronomy and naturalistic. It is organised by the Friends of Astronomy Club of East Macedonia every year during the month of July on mountain Ypsario of Thassos. It is hosted at the premises of the mountaineering club and supported by the generous sponsorship of businesses operating on the island and northern Greece.
In order to spread the peculiarities of Thassos to amateur astronomers and the general public (observing beginners and lovers) in Europe, decided in 2009 to organize this event on this island. Thassos is one of the darkest corners of Europe, a feature which favors the view of the sky and celestial objects, has a rich natural environment and is a popular destination for both Greeks and foreigners during the summer.
The daily program is designed to enlist the entire family. During the day offers many recreational activities, independent of astronomy, such as archery climbing and canoeing. At the same time it take place seminars and lectures on modern astronomical and environmental issues, the observational equipment, astrophotography. During the night the amateur astronomers are setting up their telescopes to make their own observations and photographs, and to allow attendees to taste through the telescope to observe the Moon, planets, star clusters, galaxies, double stars and nebulae of the summer sky.
The astrocamping combine the sky with nature and gives an opportunity for people fascinated by the environment and would like to know better, not only that, but people with similar interests to spend some pleasant days and nights, in a green party under a spectacular starry sky.
Atrocamping on Thassos 2013, at July, will be renewed with the aim, this year, to touch the stars. From 10 to 15 July, the mountain calls us to travel with seminars, observations, lectures by distinguished professors and much more, so through our fellowship, we will discover the night sky and Thassos. This year, astrocamping is ready to host foreign campers, inviting them to discover the natural beauty and a unique dark sky of the place where astronomy was born. Visit the website of Astrocamping
